Overview

The Upaya Yoga Teacher Training program is an all-inclusive, Yoga Alliance approved, 200hrs course. The program is especially sketched out by our team of gurus at Upaya to introduce the students to their journey of evolving into expert yogis and able teachers. The course paves a path for its students to transform into a yoga teaching expert and indeed the program includes skilled teachers to provide the students with a strong foundation in Hatha and Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. We have designed the program to be an enjoyable and enlightening experience. The students need to be ready spiritually and physically as our classes have various rigorous sessions as well as calmer and more healing sessions. We serve and recommend a Saatvik (yogic) diet to expand your sense of well-being.

Course content

The Upaya Yoga 200h Yoga Teacher Training Course (YTTC) is aimed at producing skilled and motivating yoga teachers that are proficient in the ancient practices of the yoga sutras and can impart this knowledge to their students. The yoga teacher training curriculum is based on the five pillars of this art which can be understood as the practical application of the traditional paths of yoga. A rigorous daily schedule includes two meditation sessions, two yoga classes followed by lectures, teaching practices, and workshops. The intensive 22 days/ 21 nights program include 2 days off for the attendees to relax, study, and assimilate the learnings.

Our aim is to offer you an in-depth understanding of the art of teaching yoga and clarify each query or confusion that may arise during a class. Students of the Upaya Yoga program get the opportunity to practice and learn the teachings of Hatha yoga, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga Vinyasa, their differences, postures, and reasoning behind each posture.

In the last week of training, students have semi-private classes with a dedicated teacher to work on specific areas of their practice and be ready for graduation.

Our Curriculum Includes:

Asana Practice:

The program at Upaya is designed to offer its students a solid foundation in Ashtanga Vinyasa and Hatha Yoga, focusing on the right alignment of the yogic postures.  A daily asana practice class gives the students an opportunity to practice their own asanas and helps to build deep insight of the various forms and postures. The daily in-depth practice with individual corrections comprises of the Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation), Multi-Style yoga postures, 100 asanas variations from intermediate to advanced level, Posture alignments and adjustments, Deep relaxation, and Release of blocked energy. Training sessions are suitable for all age groups.

In addition to daily asana practices, students learn how to break down and teach each posture, including the main benefits, modifications, and contraindications.

Yoga Philosophy:

Classical Yoga Philosophy is intertwined all through the course and you will receive knowledge about Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita, allowing you to bridge classical and modern yoga and understanding the true meaning of Yoga. The dedicated yoga philosophy sessions provide a great insight into ancient wisdom and help reflect on all that you have learned in the course. In turn, you will learn how to imbibe these philosophies into your own life and will experience unison of the body, mind, and soul.

Pranayama, bandha, mudra:

Pranayama, or the science of breath control, is one of the Five Principles of Yoga. It expands lung capacity and relaxes the nervous system by balancing the two hemispheres of the brain. The art of Kapalabhati (lung cleansing exercise), Anuloma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing) and Samanu (mental cleansing of the nadis) will be taught.

Focusing on the rhythm of your breathing and becoming familiar with it is the essence of pranayama. This is a vital feature of yoga and is often neglected as most give more importance to physical practice. Pranayama is an excellent way to destress, build spiritual and emotional power, and sustain a healthy life each day.

Kriyas: 

Cleansing will purify the system and allow the breath to run easily. Our 200-hour course includes explanation and demonstration of Tratak, Neti, Kapalabhati, Dhauti, Nauli, and other purification exercises for the various parts of the body such as the eyes, nose, air passages, esophagus and stomach, abdominal organs and large intestine exercises. We will look into the effect of each practice and understand their individual instructions.

Yoga Anatomy:

Through an introduction to the major body systems you will study the effects of asanas and pranayama on the cardiovascular system, muscular systems, digestion, skeletal, respiration and endocrine system. These classes will give you a deeper understanding by observing the mechanism of every posture.

Our purpose is to give you knowledge of anatomy so that you leave with a better awareness of your own body and can apply this knowledge to teaching yoga in a safe manner. During the lessons, you will lay emphasis on how to adapt your practice by recognizing your weaknesses. These may be due to a lack of strength or flexibility in a particular area. You will learn preparation techniques to make improvements in your practice.  Throughout the classes, our assistant teachers provide you with complete personal attention to support you.

Centering Yourself:
Your transformation journey begins with a daily exploration of yourself! This course is about Self Growth and includes coaching tools to take with you and apply to your life and future career as a yoga teacher.

Teaching Techniques and Practice Teaching:
In these hours you will learn and practice valuable tools and teaching methodology that will support you in becoming a powerful teacher. You will imbibe the ability to address a large group as well as learn to connect with each student in your class. You will explore the use of your voice, language, body language, visualization, ability to connect with your students confidently through verbal cues, the use of props, effective demonstration, and acute observation with safe and effective physical adjustments.

Yoga Successful Business:
You will study and learn to effectively nurture and preserve abundance through your yoga teaching career. The end of your training session will equip you with a complete resume to immediately begin promoting yourself as a Yoga Teacher.

Typical daily schedule for 200-hour YTTC course:

  • 6.30 – 7.30 am: Chanting, pranayama, and meditation
  • 7.30 – 9.00 am: Monday, Wednesday and Fridays – Hatha yoga, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday – Ashtanga Vinyasa
  • 9.00 – 10.00 am: Breakfast
  • 10.00 – 1.00pm: Alignment, adjustment, lecture
  • 1.00 – 2.00 pm: Lunch
  • 2.00 – 3.00 pm: Self Study/Self Care
  • 4.00 – 4.30 pm: Yoga Nidra
  • 4.30 – 6.00 pm: Teaching practice
  • 7.00 – 8.00 pm: Dinner
  • 8.30 – 9.30 pm: Sharing and question and answer, night meditation, live music concerts, watching your teaching practice or Yoga Movie on screen. (this is only alternate days)

Ashtanga Yoga Teacher

Prem was born in Lumbini, west Nepal, on 3rd April 1991. He is a graduate in Arts. He enjoys painting, playing guitar and flute in his free time.

He has really an inspiring journey. He moved to India around 8 years ago in 2010. He joined Upaya Yoga’s kitchen staff as a chef in 2014. He is master in preparing Indian Yogic Saatvik Vegetarian food with different flavors. His creativity and caring personality manifest every single day when he prepares pure and delicious yogic food for Upaya’s students.

Teacher at Upaya Yoga

Alida is Italian originally from Catania. Her journey into yoga started four years ago in London to eventually bring her to India in the search for a superior meaning beyond this now worldwide acclaimed word yoga. She now firmly believes that yoga is a secure way for self-discovery, personal growth, and positive changing. Alida’s class aim to guide the practitioners closer to the self by moving into a flow where breath and asana can harmoniously merge together.

Kids Yoga Teacher

Jessica’s love for Yoga started during her Psychology studies in University. Besides being dedicated to the study of human thoughts and feelings and making humanitarian trips around the world, she felt like something was missing in order to follow her life mission of making this world a better place. She then discovered this Meditation, Mindfulness and Movement art which is called Yoga and it completely changed her life and saved her. She then wanted to share this gift by becoming a certified Yoga instructor. Having completed more than 500 hours of teacher training programs all across India and Canada, Jessica teaches Yoga to kids and adults for the living.
